Master of Medical Science (MSC) in Clinical Reconstructive Microsurgery, International Master Science Program in Reconstructive Microsurgery, Chang Gung University
The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH), Taiwan, in conjunction with Chang Gung University (CGU), is proud to present the world’s first accredited academic degree which combines both hands-on clinical microsurgery experience as a fellow coupled with a structured microsurgery curriculum. The distinguishing feature of this master’s program is that it provides clinical learning unparalleled to no other at present. Reconstructive microsurgery is best learnt in a safe, clinical environment and the CGU Master of Science program allows one to achieve that goal. With the largest number of microsurgical reconstructions in the world at a single institution, the collaboration between CGMH and CGU promises to bring microsurgery academia to newer heights. Participants can expect to be trained in not only concepts in reconstructive microsurgery but also hone their technical expertise in this field. Our instructors come with a wealth of experience and knowledge in the field having performed regular microsurgical reconstructions on a daily basis. Their dedicated approach to teaching create a safe and conducive environment for learning and practice. A range of topics include microsurgical reconstruction in head and neck, upper or lower extremity, brachial plexus, functional muscle transfers as well as the reconstruction of defects in the chest, abdomen, trunk or genitalia. Breast reconstruction and surgical management of lymphedema will also be taught by world leading experts at our institution. Immunology related to vascularized composite allotransplantation will be taught which would equip every reconstructive surgeon with the basic knowledge in the novel yet crucial developing field of research. Other key topics learnt are managing flaps in the post-operative period as well as dealing with flap complications. Having a reputation for reconstructive excellence and innovation, academia and publications are encouraged. Each participant has the opportunity to engage in research related to microsurgical reconstruction which should be directed to producing at least one research article in an SCI indexed journal by the end of the year. This will ensure that participants not only develop excellent microsurgical skills but also equip them with the know how in developing new and novel ideas which help push the boundaries of reconstructive science, contributing to their home countries as a whole. Each participant will have an educational supervisor as well as regular meetings with the course director – Professor Fu-Chan Wei. Progress updates will be closely monitored and regular feedback sessions allow the participants to ensure that they obtain the maximum from their time here. A thesis of their research is expected at the end of the course which should be an amalgamation of concepts developed here as a result of the increased exposure in reconstructive microsurgery. A viva session at the end of the course will be held for each participant to defend their thesis in front of an expert panel. Participants not only get to benefit from constructive criticism but also help hone their critical thinking skills. The CGU Master’s in Reconstructive Microsurgery degree represents the epitome of reconstructive science and clinical acumen combined. Obtaining such a degree from a center known for its pinnacle of reconstructive excellence embodies the aspirations of every budding reconstructive microsurgeon. If this is your calling, join us now and together, let us push forward the frontiers of reconstructive science.
